HINTON
This
is Beaufort Hunt country with Badminton just a few miles up the road
and many more interesting country houses to be found in the area .
Adjacent to Hinton and a brisk walk away is the historic Dyrham Park,
designed by Samuel Hauduroy in 1691 for William Blathwayt who was
secretary of state and at war for William 111.
Main entrance to this National Trust property is via the A46 but the
rear entrance gives one an opportunity to visit St Peters church which
is squeezed in between a steep wood and the main house plus wonderful
glimpses of the Dutch style water gardens and the village.
Dodington House, the magnificent former seat of the Codringtons is
to be found virtually next door and is now owned by vacuum cleaner
magnate James Dyson.
Other interesting country houses in the vicinity include the Tracy
Park Estate
now The Gloucestershire golf complex
and the impressive Elizabethan manor at Cold Ashton, once home to
several Bristol mayors.
A little further towards Bath a left turn takes one to St Catherines
Court and church, which seems caught in a time warp and is now the
home of the actress Jane Seymour.
Church crawlers amongst us will have a field day by visiting the surrounding
villages of Westerleigh, Pucklechurch, Syston, Abson, Wick, Dyhram,
Marshfield and Doynton, all of which boast ancient churches some dating
back to Norman times plus interesting features too numerous to mention.
